Catalog description

This seminar interrogates the concept of "race" as an essential category of analysis for the study of religion. The genealogy of "race" as co-constitutive with "religion" in the west is considered. The course also examines adjacent concepts marking perceived bodily differences and hierarchical social arrangements including "ethnicity," and "caste," as well as linked forms of identity (class, sex, gender). The course includes discussions of how race continues to inform and influence the profession.
