Investigates the work of a selection of moral philosophers who take the relation between the self and the other to be of fundamental ethical significance. For these philosophers, a special normative force often described in terms of an ethical demand inheres in the relation between the self and the other. And the task taken up by these thinkers is to provide phenomenological and justificatory accounts of the nature of this special normative force: What is normatively distinctive in our experience of face-to-face encounters with others? And what, if any, justification can be given for its special normative force?
