Optimization seeks to extend numerical simulation models, by solving an "inverse problem," to determine a set of design variables that can lead to an "optimized design." In this class we will develop a mathematical foundation for design optimization, and then apply that framework, using modern software tools, to optimize real-world engineering designs.
