Catalog description

Hammer Films is best known for a series of Gothic horror films made between 1957 and 1976. It featured classic horror characters such as Baron Frankenstein, Count Dracula, The Mummy and the Wolf Man, re-introduced to audiences in vivid color for the first time. Hammer's films were immensely popular, not just because of the graphic violence shown on screen but because they made explicit the hitherto concealed sexual subtexts of Gothic horror. The seminar is an overview/reading of classic Hammer Films, with an emphasis on the horror genre plus some Hammer influenced horror films as points of comparison.
