At a moment when facts can be alternative and news can be fake, this course explores how our very notions of truth, facts, and fiction came into being. Between 1450-1750, the visual arts and literature became deeply concerned with the question of truthfulness in representation of the world. This course will explore the history of truth while helping students to understand the complexities of its status today.
