The Global Imaginary

The concept of the global imaginary poses a challenge to the methodological and discursive approaches to globalization in dominant social science disciplines. Evoking the imaginary offers an opportunity to move beyond the material descriptions of globalization and substantially consider what some describe as “disembodied globalization,” that is the words, images, texts, symbols, ideas, narratives and aesthetic forms of expression that point to a developing global consciousness. This course examines the work of thinkers who grapple with the notion of the imaginary and contribute to an understanding of the subjective and affective dimensions of imagining and experiencing our interconnected world through a global perspective.
