Covers topics in oceanic fluid dynamics through the lens of theory and computer simulation. The course blends theoretical treatment of oceanic dynamical regimes (e.g., gyres, coastal upwelling) with hands-on experience designing and analyzing simulations. Topics may vary, but can include: the primitive equations, numerical techniques, gyre-scale circulation, quasi-geostrophic and mesoscale dynamics, internal waves, coastal processes, and boundary layer turbulence. Students gain experience running a community-standard ocean circulation model in a high-performance computing environment. Class sessions comprise lectures, student-led discussion of papers or topics, and dedicated time for simulation design and analysis.
