Race, Immigration, and White Supremacy in California

Catalog description

California was part of the Spanish empire before it was incorporated into the United States under the Treaty of Guadalupe with Mexico. This interdisciplinary course explores the legacies of colonialism and the logics of white supremacy as they continue to shape the migration experience to California. This course considers internal migration from other regions of the United States, and migration from Asia. One goal of this course is to challenge and rethink the mythologies of migration and the California Dream, while excavating the varied experiences of privileged and precarious migration.
