Special Topics in Cultural Studies: Media and Datification

Catalog description

In this seminar, we explore how processes of datification and machine learning and AI tools are being used to reconfigure media technologies, industries, content, and audiences. Topics to be discussed include: recommendation systems and taste, "blackboxing" and the politics of transparency/opacity, algorithmic bias and racism, the labor of content moderation, data storage and distribution, and online tracking and surveillance, among other issues.
