Race and/in AI
University of California Santa Barbara · UGRD · Fall 2026
1 section
Catalog description
Critical work on artificial intelligence has, by now, revealed it as an intense tool of surveillance, policing, and racialization. This work has demonstrated the vastly unequal distributions of the political effects of race; however, this work has also demonstrated alternative practices, both current and speculative, with, alongside, and/or against AI. This course traces these diverse accounts of race and/in AI with the goal of answering the following three questions: What, when, and where is race in AI?
