Catalog description

This course is designed to introduce students to and increase their knowledge of the broad literary genre of speculative fiction & fantasy with a focus on writers of color. Readings include authors within and outside the US from the late 19th century to present. Emphasis is on the study of novels and short stories through a lens of racialized cultures, marginalized voices, disability, and LGBTQ+ writing. Materials include short film, movies, music (videos), visual art, and comic books. Course objective is to strengthen literary analysis through close reading and to consider how/why writers of color world-build intertextually.
