Refugee Narratives: The Arts of Mapping Displacement

Catalog description

Explores conditions of forced displacement from the perspectives of refugee artists, writers, and storytellers. Students will engage with the UCSB Art, Design, and Architecture museum’s Winter 2026 exhibit featuring Tiffany Chung’s artwork, known for her maps of global migration as a result of war, environmental disaster, and industrialization. Through Chung’s artwork and literature by refugee authors, we will consider specific refugee stories from Vietnamese, Cambodian, Lao, Syrian, and Afghan diasporas. Students will create their own "story map" that combines literary and visual elements to tell a story about forced migration.
