In this research-intensive course, we reconstruct the 1939 murder trial and execution of Robert Nixon, the exhaustive press coverage of which Richard Wright fictionalizes in his novel, Native Son (1940). This legal, journalistic, and literary case study provides an excellent opportunity to analyze representations of race and criminality in American culture.
