Renaissance Travel Drama: England and Islam

Catalog description

This course focuses on a range of travel narratives from the early modern era (16th-18th centuries) that chart the British engagement with the Islamic world. It also covers stage plays and other forms of drama that build on these travel narratives to address questions about cross-cultural encounters in terms of religion, ethnicity, race, gender, sexuality and other social vectors. Our aim will be to read these works closely and to put them in their historical and literary contexts.
