Indigenous Latinx Migrations

Catalog description

Through an examination of national and Indigenous contexts, this course considers how race and migration to the United States affects Indigenous peoples from Latin America. For many Indigenous Latinx immigrants, the racism and discrimination they experience in the United States is informed by both settler colonialism in the United States as well as the racist logics of their home countries. Given that both contexts shape Indigenous immigrants’ experiences, students will think about injustice and resistance across borders. Students will explore how Indigenous migration complicates and transforms notions of Latinidad in ways that are generative and that have shaped labor, social movements, gender dynamics, and the field of Chicana/o Studies.
