Indigenous People and the Nation State in the Americas

The focus of this course is the changing relationship between indigenous people and the state. Departing from the common experience of colonialism, we compare the differences and similarities between indigenous peoples' mobilizations in the cases of Canada, USA, Ecuador, Chile, Guatemala, Bolivia and Mexico. We pay special attention to how state policies, socio-political dynamics, and the displacement from rural areas and migration, is shifting the definition and understanding of ethnic identity and belonging.
