How do we recognize characters in stories as being true to life? What does this say about how we know and value one another as individuals in real life? We will pursue these questions by focusing on literatures engagement with legal fictions designed to account for individuals innermost thoughts, desires, and intentions. Studying these legal fictions can help us to think critically about what we mean by poetic and social justice.
