ARTHI 137GA
Architecture and Theory in Germany and Austria (1770-1870)
University of California Santa Barbara · UGRD · Fall 2026
1 section
Catalog description
Between 1770 and 1871, the German speaking lands of Europe experienced both political unification and an astounding cultural rebirth (Kant, Hegel, Goethe, Beethoven, Brahms, Wagner, Marx, Nietzsche...). This blossoming extended to architecture and town planning as well, as the region transformed itself into one of Europe's most vibrant laboratories for theory and design. This course will examine this remarkable period of change by examining architecture, town planning, and some architectural theory (in translation) in their larger cultural and political contexts.
