Considers the contemporary intersections of poverty and families in the U.S. Explores definitions of poverty, prevalent theoretical understandings of poverty, the impact of poverty on families and the strategies they use to cope, demographics, existing and proposed policies designed to mitigate poverty and their relationships to families. Pays particular attention to systems of race, class, and gender to questions of causes vs. symptoms of poverty and to political economic issues. Recommended Preparation: SOC 303 .
