Begins with the question of imperial decline and investigates the cultural and political responses of Middle Eastern societies to the challenges of European colonialism and imperialism; the emergence of nationalism and nation-state building; and modern social, political, intellectual, and religious movements. Emphasis on the historical background and development of contemporary issues, such as revolution, Islamism, women’s rights, and globalization.
