Writing as a Rhetorical Act

Catalog description

Focuses on writing as a rhetorical act that (re)produces social constructions and power relations. Emphasizes writing for specific audiences and purposes and navigating genre conventions such as argument structure, evidence integration, style, and formatting. Includes critical reflection on the writing process during multi-draft writing projects that require substantive revision in response to peer and instructor feedback. Analyzes strategies for communicating effectively in diverse rhetorical situations, and applies those strategies to academic, research-based writing. Enrollment Restrictions: Enrollment determined by Directed Self Placement (DSP). In the event that a student does not complete DSP, then enrollment is restricted to students in English Placement Category I or II, or students who have completed GEW 101A with a grade of C- (1.7) or better. GEW 101B and GEW 101A may not be taken concurrently. Prerequisite(s): GEW 101A (for students who are placed into a Directed Self Placement (DSP) pathway that requires GEW 101A, or for Category III and IV students who do not complete DSP).
