Avian Biology Lecture and Lab

Catalog description

Studies birds, encompassing traditional ornithology and applied avian ecology. Covers the fundamentals of avian systematics, evolution, anatomy, physiology, reproduction, behavior, ecology, and conservation. Includes dinosaur origins, flight mechanics and physiology, foraging and feeding behavior, social interactions and life history strategies, and population dynamics. The laboratory component focuses on providing direct, hands-on experience with the tools and techniques of ornithology and avian ecology. The laboratory, field, and discussion activities cover avian systematics, anatomy, local species identification, census techniques, behavioral observation methods, data analysis, and discussions of relevant scientific literature. Three hours of lecture. Four hours of laboratory. May not be taken for credit by students who received credit for: BIOL 597-04 or BIOL 506 . Off-campus field trips may be required. Prerequisite(s): BIOL 353 , BIOL 354 , or enrollment in the Biological Sciences Graduate Program.
