Catalog description

Introduces modern molecular biology, including genomics. Includes genome sequencing, transcript profiling, genome-wide association, and large-scale mutagenesis. Guided by primary literature, explores both the technologies that underlie modern molecular biology and the impacts that current studies are having on our understanding of all biology, from agriculture to human disease. The laboratory component involves experiments and/or analyses pertaining to next-generation sequencing and related applications. May include performing next-generation sequencing sample and library preparation, sequencing runs, or bioinformatics analytical pipelines. Three hours of lecture. Four hours of laboratory. May not be taken for credit by students who received credit for: BIOL 503 . Prerequisite(s): BIOL 351 or BIOT 355 , or enrollment in the Biological Sciences graduate program.
