Catalog description

Studies the mammalian immune system at the molecular and cellular level. Explores mechanisms of immunology, such as generation of unique receptor specificities, transduction of signals through T and B cell receptors, programmed cell death and lymphocyte selection, regulation of responses by growth factors and cytokines, and cell-cell interactions, are explored. Includes perspectives on historical and technological aspects of modern immunobiology. The laboratory component covers modern immunological assays and methodologies. Includes specific techniques such as hemagluttination, ELISAs, immunoprecipitation and Western blot assays. Also explores section on animal handling, targeting animal research ethics, rodent handling, and tissue dissection. Exposes students to immunological database and algorithmic tools in a bioinformation unit. Three hours of lecture. Four hours of laboratory. May not be taken for credit by students who received credit for: BIOL 477 . Prerequisite(s): BIOL 351 or BIOT 355 , or enrollment in the Biological Sciences graduate program.
