Freshwater Biology

Catalog description

Introduction to the physical, chemical and biological processes in freshwater systems, including headwaters, streams, rivers, lakes, ponds, reservoirs, and vernal pools. Topics include biogeochemical cycling, controls on production, evolutionary selection, community patterns, population dynamics, and food web structure. Significant species in the open water and attached communities will be discussed regarding composition, environmental factors and role. Analyzes the impacts of using freshwaters for drinking water, irrigation, recreation, transportation, flood control, and power generation. Field trip(s) during or outside of class (including weekends) may be required. Prerequisite(s): For Environmental Biology Minors: BIOL 211 . For Biological Sciences Majors: BIOL 210 and BIOL 211 .
