Catalog description

Critical examination of the early modern development of photography and the medium’s contemporary usages, cultural meanings and contested histories. Focuses on the intersections between the photograph as art object, historical record, advertising image and cultural histories and identities. Also considers new artistic approaches to redefining the documentary tradition, especially in light of the relationships between photography and new media technologies. Includes discussions, lectures, on-site critical viewing, research papers and collaborative projects. May not be taken for credit by students who received credit for: VSAR 423. Satisfies GE area: UD3
