Catalog description

This course describes and evaluates underlying pathogenesis of major cardiovascular disorders and the cardiovascular pharmacology. Upon completion of this course, students gain an understanding of major cardiovascular disease states, drug targets based on understanding the pathophysiology, the mechanism of action and adverse effects of drugs used to treat cardiovascular disorders. Selected topics include hypertension, atherosclerosis and dyslipidemia, thrombosis, arrhythmia, ischemic heart diseases, heart failure, venous thromboembolism, peripheral arterial diseases, stroke, valvular disease, and cardiovascular shock. In addition, this course also covers acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease as well as homeostasis and imbalance of sodium/water, electrolyte, and acid-base in the living body. These concepts and disorders are relevant to cardiovascular diseases and others. (Prerequisites: PBS601, PBS603, & PBS 604) Formerly PHAR 724
