Catalog description

Foundations II integrates major concepts on which subsequent courses will be built, including medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, and pharmacology. Medicinal chemistry topics include drug structure, macromolecular targets of drugs, ligand -receptor interactions, signaling, stereochemistry, metabolism, drug interactions, and alternative/herbal medicines. Biochemical topics include synthesis and metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins, as well as vitamins, cofactors, and nutrition. Principles of pharmacology include pharmacodynamics, molecular and cellular mechanisms of action, pathophysiology, toxicology, and an introduction to the nervous system, including the autonomic nervous system.
