The Books of the Aztecs

Catalog description
Studies Indigenous-authored texts, called codices, among the people commonly known as the Aztecs. Examines the writing conventions and patterns within these visual, glyphic texts, including identification of environmental elements and ways of illustrating interconnectedness and relationships among human and more-than-human life. Challenges Western views regarding the primacy of written and specifically alphabetic texts and, by extension, views on Indigenous people. Online classroom format includes short (5-10 minute) asynchronous lectures and instructional videos, virtual discussions, and interactive digital readings and artwork, as part of UC Online.
