Catalog description

This course is a study the theology, historical setting, and subsequent trajectory of the Lutheran Confessional documents as collected in the Book of Concord. The primary goal of the course is to encounter these historical documents as part of a living and ongoing tradition, with special attention to the role played by such signature confessional themes as justification by grace through faith apart from works, Article 7 ecclesiology, tradition vs. innovation, and more. Attention will also be paid to varieties of "confessional" adherence both historically and today, with an eye towards understanding what it means to be a part of a confessional church in the 21st century.
