FOUNDATIONS OF ENV LAW

Catalog description

Enrollment restricted to MLS and CLS students only. This survey course offers a broad, practical understanding of core federal environmental statutes, regulations, cases, and policies for MLS and CLS students. The class will begin with an introduction to the sources and values underlying U.S. environmental law, the tools of modern environmental regulation, and the role of federal agencies in implementing environmental legislation. The course will then survey major federal laws. Overall, the course will seek to give students a foundation of understanding by covering fundamentals of environmental law and environmental policymaking and providing an overview of the key federal environmental statutes. Statutes to be examined include those addressing environmental impact assessment, water and air quality protection (including climate change), hazardous waste management and cleanup, and biodiversity protection. Note: Students who previously enrolled in Environmental Law (LAW*181) or Environmental Law & Policy (LAW*704) may not enroll in this course.
