FOUNDATIONS OF IP LAW

Catalog description

Enrollment restricted to MLS and CLS students only. This course is designed to provide students with a deeper understanding of the laws of intellectual property (IP) and practice. The course will provide students with practical knowledge of IP rights and equip students with the basic skills to analyze IP rights in various contexts that professionals encounter. The course will cover the following topics and related laws designed to protect IP: (1) trademarks (and domain names); (2) copyright; (3) patents; and (4) trade secrets. The course will also touch upon strategies for licensing, enforcement, and protection of the IP rights covered in the course. The class will also explore the ethical considerations raised by AI in the context of the evolution of IP law. The course will aim to ensure that students understand the different forms of IP; the circumstances in which IP rights arise; and how IP rights are obtained, protected, maintained, and exploited. Note: Students who previously enrolled in Stat: Intellectual Property Law (LAW*178) or Intellectual Property Survey (LAW*412) may not enroll in this course.
