CORPORATE DEFENSE PRACTICUM

Satisfies the Experiential Requirement. This course provides students with a head start on their legal careers by building practice skills and confidence in a real-world format that is engaging and fun. The course centers on representation of corporations and their officers and directors but is designed to develop skills that apply in all practice areas. Students perform a broad range of lawyering tasks as primary counsel in simulation exercises abstracted from cases and events that generated national media attention. The exercises are conducted using original documents, with guidance and coaching from an experienced practitioner who served as lead counsel in the matters. Students argue motions as plaintiffs and defendants, participate in meetings with internal teams, clients, in-house lawyers, opposing counsel, financial auditors and the SEC, make presentations and conduct internal investigation interviews. The substantive law relevant to the exercises is provided in the course materials and covered in lectures and class discussion focused on legal principles, strategies and techniques. No outside research is required.
