May be used to satisfy the Writing Requirement. Work occupies a central role in our lives. It is also a controversial site of government regulation. This class explores four modes of workplace regulation: regulation by the common law, regulation through collective action in the workplace, statutory regulation of individual rights in the workplace, and neoliberal regulatory strategies. It does so by examining topics in the regulation of the contemporary workplace. While the specific substantive topics may change from year to year, typical topics include: the regulation of worker speech, gig work, and workplace safety; mandatory arbitration and the privatization of employment dispute resolution; and disputes over diversity, equity, and inclusion in contemporary workplaces. The course is a requirement of the Work Law Concentration, but it is open to all students who have completed a prerequisite course. Prerequisites: Employment Discrimination (LAW*180 or LAW*352), Employment Law (LAW*435) or Labor Law (LAW*447). One of these courses must be completed prior to taking this course.
