Martial Arts As Transformation

This course invites students to explore martial arts as a living laboratory for transformation-an embodied discipline that integrates somatic intelligence, ethical cultivation, and the evolution of consciousness. Far beyond combat or sport, martial arts traditions across cultures have long functioned as technologies of the self: rigorous practices through which individuals refine perception, align body and mind, and awaken relational and ecological awareness. Students will engage in both theoretical study and embodied reflection to investigate how martial arts operate as vehicles for psychological integration, social ethics, and spiritual development. Drawing from a range of transdisciplinary perspectives-including phenomenology, somatics, philosophy of mind, transpersonal psychology, and critical cultural studies-this course explores how martial arts can illuminate broader questions of being, power, and liberation. We will examine key traditions such as Chinese internal arts (taijiquan, baguazhang, xingyiquan), Japanese budo (aikido, kendo, karate-do), Korean and Southeast Asian forms, and African diasporic systems of movement, rhythm, and resistance. By approaching these practices as systems of embodied knowledge, students will analyze how movement becomes a site of inquiry into consciousness, ethics, and interdependence. Students are invited to bring their own embodied practices-whether martial, meditative, or artistic-into dialogue with course materials. Through this experiential and reflexive engagement, the classroom becomes a dojo of inquiry: a space to investigate how disciplined movement and mindful awareness can transform one's sense of agency, identity, and relational presence. The course positions martial arts as a way of knowing that bridges theory and practice, uniting epistemology (how we know), ontology (how we exist), and axiology (how we live well).
