Catalog description

This course is the final class that students take in the program. The course emphasizes the integration of somatic and other clinical approaches. Theoretical understandings of clinical applications are focused upon, and skills such as observation, diagnosis, treatment planning, and intervention are underscored and further developed. Students write a final paper and do a presentation on the theme Toward a Theory and Practice of Somatic Psychotherapy. This course integrates the equivalent of 1.0 unit of CA Ethics and the Law and through the lens of clinical work including professional orientation, ethics, and law in counseling, including California law and professional ethics for professional clinical counselors, professional ethical standards and legal considerations, licensing law and process, regulatory laws that delineate the profession's scope of practice, counselor-client privilege, confidentiality, the client being dangerous to self or others, treatment of minors with or without parental consent, relationship between practitioner's sense of self and human values, functions and relationships with other human service providers, strategies for collaboration, and advocacy processes needed to address institutional and social barriers that impede access, equity, and success for clients.
