This course covers research and evaluation, including studies that provide an understanding of research methods, statistical analysis, the use of research to inform evidence-based practice, the importance of research in advancing the profession of counseling, and statistical methods used in conducting research, needs assessment, and program evaluation. The course will study the most common designs of marriage and family therapy / expressive arts therapy research and methodological roots; the difference between qualitative and quantitative methods; techniques of data collection and analysis; integration of qualitative and quantitative methods; and current issues related to diversity and inclusivity in research. We will explore topics such as the purpose and applications of research; issues of power, trust, race, class, and social justice; ethical issues; and the relationship of psychological research to cultural knowledge systems.. A small qualitative research proposal final project will serve as a practical learning tool of a research design, methodology, arts intervention, and ethical considerations.
