Catalog description

The goal of this course is to complete a dissertation proposal. This course relies on the independent scholarship and initiative of Human Sexuality (HSX) PhD students to complete all requirements to become a PhD Candidate (also known as All But Dissertation, or ABD, status). The professor of this course guides this process with the student and their dissertation committee. Registration for this course is limited to HSX students who have passed both comprehensive exams and are in good academic standing. The proposal should demonstrate to the dissertation committee that the groundwork for conducting the research has been properly prepared and that the student is a competent agent for directing the work as indicated by the multiple levels of approvals necessary during the process outlined within this course for converting from doctoral student to doctoral candidate status. The basics for a doctoral dissertation proposal in the Human Sexuality Program are taught to students in this course. At the end of this course, a well planned, feasible, and ethical proposal includes identification of the subject to be explored including an applicable research purpose or question/s, adequate documentation that the work has been properly situated in the pertinent literature and theoretical framework/s; that the research methodology is adequate to meet the needs of the research question/s or aims, articulation of a tactical recruitment and analysis plans to be employed during the investigation, the addition of relevant research tools such as the informed consent forms, questionnaires, or description of experiments, and includes other items as required and approved by the student's dissertation committee and the department chair to complete the project. The proposal must demonstrate a critical scholarly stance, a statement of how this work aligns within Critical Sexuality Studies, a positionality statement, and the capacity of the student to understand and abide by general scholarly rules and traditions regarding research legitimacy, validity, ethics, and quality of analysis, including where appropriate the approval of the CIIS Human Research Review Committee (HRRC).
