Catalog description

This course introduces the historical, foundational, and emerging concepts of this transdisciplinary field of expressive arts therapy, including a broader inquiry into the various ways the arts mediate human health and relationships across diverse cultural-historical contexts. This course employs a critical, holistic, integrated approach to the study of aesthetic culture, fostering the student's ability to begin to work across and beyond disciplinary borders in visual art, dance, drama, music, poetry, etc. Each participant in the class, student and faculty alike, will be regarded as a learner-teacher, whose lived experience has as much to contribute to this inquiry as established academic knowledge. To this end, the collective tasks include: reflect upon and share our perspectives with each other, critically dialogue with the established knowledge of the fields of creative and expressive arts therapies, and establish a base for further culturally-situated, aesthetic, embodied, relational, and intellectual learning. RESTRICTED TO EXPRESSIVE ARTS THERAPY STUDENTS
