All forms of writing communicate ideas, discoveries, and stories. Academic writing is the means through which scholars communicate their intellectual ideas to one another and to the world, thereby creating new forms of knowledge. Through coherent, expressive writing, we contribute our own unique voices to larger conversations going on within our respective disciplines. The goal of this class is to support students in achieving new levels of writing proficiency as well as self-awareness and confidence in an academic environment as both writers and readers. Students will work on foundational writing skills, from grammar and punctuation to thesis statement development, transitions, argument building, and more. We will also discuss how language, culture, society, and identity shape the expression of ideas. This course supports students of all writing levels and abilities who want to continue to cultivate their academic writing skills.
