Sex Counseling II

Catalog description

Building upon the foundational skills developed in Sex Counseling I, this course deepens participants' understanding of sex counseling by exploring specialized areas and the broader systemic factors that shape sexual experiences. Particular attention is given to the ways in which systems of oppression impact the lives of marginalized populations, including LGBTQ+ individuals, people with disabilities, culturally and faith-based diverse communities, kinky clients, and survivors of severe trauma such as torture, intimate partner violence, and sexual violence. Counseling approaches will be examined through a sex-positive, intersectional, and trauma-informed lens, incorporating principles of cultural relativism to ensure responsive and affirming care. Participants will develop advanced skills and tools for working with these populations, with a focus on service provision, advocacy, and critical engagement with research, policy, and media. The course emphasizes interdisciplinary analysis, equipping students with the ability to critically assess and navigate policies that impact sexual health and rights. Additionally, the curriculum supports broader efforts in reproductive justice, sexual rights, and sexual citizenship while reinforcing best practices aligned with evolving standards of care in the field.
