This course is built upon the basic concepts of structure and function, which include the homeostasis and metabolic control learned during the 1st year Endocrine and Reproductive System (ERS) course. This course provides information on the ERS, which, through the production of hormones, influences the activities and function of every cell, organ, and system of the body. The course will provide an overview of the development of the male and female reproductive and endocrine systems. The focus of learning in this course is mainly to understand the pathophysiology of the disease states arising from abnormal glandular and reproductive function and the therapeutic principles involved in the management of these disorders. This is a multidisciplinary integrative course that incorporates clinical aspects of pathology, microbiology (microbial, parasitic, and viral infections), pharmacology, anatomy, physiology, histopathology, including common diagnostic procedures and diagnostic imaging related to the endocrine and reproductive systems. The pathophysiology of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, adrenal, thyroid, parathyroid, and endocrine pancreas is emphasized. Additionally, this course will include an overview of general obstetrics and the pathophysiology and clinical presentations for a wide spectrum of gynecological disorders. The pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of major male reproductive pathologies.
