Food Justice

Three hours lecture per week Prerequisite(s): Successful Completion of Golden Four (GE 1A, 1B, 1C, 2) This class examines the injustices that exist in our current food system and the various ways that groups seek to achieve food justice for farmworkers, low-income consumers, and farmers of color. It looks at how unequal distribution of farmland and lack of access to healthy food has been shaped by historical processes like colonization, westward expansion, redlining, and free trade agreements. Social movements that fight for an equitable and sustainable food system include food sovereignty, urban agriculture, labor rights, and farmer equity.
