Three hours lecture per week Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of Golden Four GE Areas (1A, 1B, 1C, 2) Recommended: NAS 100 or any lower division NAS course This course explores the legal relationships among, and the relative jurisdictions of, federal, tribal, and state governments. Students will examine the legal foundations of U.S.-tribal relations, including the Doctrine of Discovery, the Marshall Trilogy, treaties, and evolving federal Indian policies. Topics include civil and criminal jurisdiction, the federal trust relationship, sovereignty, taxation, family law, hunting and fishing rights, religious freedom, and Indian gaming. The course emphasizes both historical development and modern legal practice affecting Indian Country.
