Fall Orientation: Analytical reading and Experimental Design

Three hours lecture per week Prerequisite(s): Admission to the M.S. Biology program This course introduces graduate students to scientific literature analysis, experimental design and methodology, and skills necessary to be successful in a thesis-based biology master’s program. Students will read and analyze scientific literature as a group as well as individually in their research area of interest. They will analyze and discuss hypothesis formation, experimental design, data collection, and biases in research (observer, confirmation, etc.). In addition, students will learn what is involved in being a teaching assistant for undergraduate biology courses and develop relevant teaching skills.
