Three hours lecture per week Prerequisite(s): ANTH 102 or ANTH 105 or consent of instructor Recommended: Junior Standing From visible objects to hidden secrets, this course examines how material culture is utilized in museums to produce a sense of remembrance, identity, and belonging through an examination of current museum practices such as collection and care, preservation, display, archives, and research using archaeological materials and cultural objects. Midnight At the Museum explores the various knowledge paths of the known, unknown, and unknowable to understand the significance of material culture from past peoples and how to keep knowledge alive in today’s world ethically. Course content focuses on how to remain culturally sensitive during all stages of museum work, from exhibition conceptualization through execution. Additional topics include heritage management, legal frameworks, accessibility, interpretation, and digital museums.
