Where in the World? UNESCO Cultural and Natural Heritage Sites

Three hours seminar per week Prerequisite(s): ANTH 102 or ANTH 105 or consent of instructor Recommended: Junior standing UNESCO is the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Among others the organization seeks to encourage the identification, protection, and preservation of cultural and natural heritage considered to be of outstanding value to humanity. This course employs an interdisciplinary approach as students complete an in-depth study of a selection of cultural and natural heritage sites accepted as UNESCO world heritage sites, including challenges faced by the designees. Additional course topics covered associated with world heritage recognition and protection include climate change, sustainable development, tourism, disaster risk reduction, cultural landscapes, and indigenous peoples. Includes guest speakers and possible field trips to assess successes and challenges that come with UNESCO designation are possible.
