Three hours lecture per week Examination of the major historical issues and debates surrounding Japanese American communities in the United States. Analysis of primary and secondary sources that illuminate the history and lived experiences of Japanese Americans from the late nineteenth century to the present. Topics include immigration, exclusionary legislation, World War II incarceration, wartime participation and dissent, postwar resettlement, the Redress Movement, and ongoing activism for social justice. The course also explores themes of war brides, intermarriage, and postwar migration from Japan. Field trips to museums, incarceration sites, and Japanese American enclaves may be included.
