Three hours lecture per week This course introduces students to major historical issues and debates in Asian American and Pacific Islander history. It examines the experiences of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities in the United States through themes of immigration, labor, gender, community formation, racialization, and activism for social justice. Topics include the Chinese Exclusion Act, U.S. imperialism and the Spanish-American War, Japanese American incarceration during World War II, Southeast Asian refugee resettlement, the Asian American Movement, transnational adoption, labor organizing, and coalition building across communities of color.
