Catalog description

A study of advanced principles of musical organization integrating formal, contrapuntal, post-tonal, and compositional analysis. Students will examine how musical materials are structured through processes of thematic development, variation, imitation, and transformation across tonal and post-tonal contexts. The course combines methods traditionally found in form and analysis and counterpoint, emphasizing how composers create coherence, contrast, and continuity in diverse musical languages. Through analytical study, score examination, and short creative projects, students will apply these principles to deepen their understanding of musical architecture, texture, and design.
